One Health PACT / Avans – Lab-student: Basak Göksu
Three Biology and Laboratorial Research students from Avans are working for the next six months on OHPACT-related projects under the supervision of teachers with OHPACT. Within this part of the curriculum of the bachelor education, project based learning is essential.
One of this students is Basak Göksu
Who am I?
Hello, I’m Basak Göksu. A 21-year-old intern on Avans Hogeschool. Biology and
medical lab research is my study at Avans Hogeschool in Breda. In my third year
of my study I specialised in the biotechnology sector and did the minor drug
discovery in Oss, Pivot Park.
What subject will I be focussing on this semester? What will I be researching?
The internship I chose for this semester is all about the identification of
Culicidae (mosquitoes) by using a nanopore sequencer, the MinION. We will be
having poules of all sorts found in The Netherlands. The identification is based
on the conserved domains of the cytochrome c oxidase gene. Based on
comparison of already sequences of species the identification of the
mosquitoes can be done. At the end, a bioinformatic pipeline will be set up.
What do I want to do with this in the future?
I would like to improve my research and lab skills for my further studies and
sequence other families for research.
What would I like to learn?
I would like to learn how to set up a complete bioinformatic pipeline for the
identification of mosquitoes, based on the results of my sequence data.
