Eerste patiënt in Nederland met westnijlvirus

Afgelopen week is bij een man een infectie met het westnijlvirus vastgesteld. De man is niet recent in het buitenland geweest. Hij heeft het virus mogelijk in de regio Utrecht opgelopen door een muggenbeet. In deze regio zijn in augustus en september vogels en muggen gevonden met het westnijlvirus. Het is de eerste keer dat een infectie met dit virus is gevonden bij een persoon die het heeft opgelopen in Nederland.
Het westnijlvirus komt voor onder vogels en wordt overgebracht door muggen. De muggen raken geïnfecteerd doordat zij zich voeden op besmette vogels. Daarna verspreiden deze muggen het virus naar andere vogels en soms ook naar mensen en andere zoogdieren, zoals paarden. Mensen en paarden kunnen daar ziek van worden, maar spelen bij de verdere verspreiding van de ziekte geen rol. Het virus wordt niet van mens naar mens of van mens naar dier overgebracht.

Besmette vogel
In augustus van dit jaar werd in Nederland voor het eerst het westnijlvirus gevonden bij een grasmus in een natuurgebied bij Haarzuilens. De vogel werd onderzocht in het kader van het onderzoeksproject One Health PACT (OH-PACT). In dit onderzoek wordt onder andere gekeken naar het vóórkomen en voorspellen van muggen-overdraagbare virussen in Nederland. Naar aanleiding van deze vondst is er een bericht uitgegaan naar de Nederlandse laboratoria en specialisten om alerter te zijn op infectie met het westnijlvirus. Dat het virus in de regio Utrecht circuleerde werd bevestigd door OH-PACT onderzoek uitgevoerd bij muggen en de vondst van nog twee positieve vogels.
Muggenseizoen
Met de weeromslag van afgelopen weken loopt het muggen seizoen ten einde. Daarmee wordt het risico op het oplopen van een infectie met westnijlvirus minimaal. Voorafgaand aan het volgende muggenseizoen zullen adviezen en eventuele verdere acties worden voorgesteld.

First human case of West Nile virus in the Netherlands
Last week, the first human patient was diagnosed with West Nile virus in the Netherlands. The man had not been abroad recently. It is therefore suspected that he acquired the virus through a mosquito bite, in the Utrecht region. In August and September, West Nile virus was found in birds and mosquitoes in the same region. This is the first evidence of a human infection acquired in the Netherlands.
West Nile virus is transmitted by mosquitoes that contract the virus by feeding on previously infected birds. Consequently, these mosquitoes can transmit the virus to other birds and sometimes to humans or other mammals, such as horses. Humans and horses can develop symptoms, but do not contribute tofurther transmission of the virus. The virus is not transmitted from human to human or from human to animal.

Infected bird
In August this year, West Nile virus was first found in a common whitethroat in a nature park near Haarzuilens. The bird was investigated as part of a research project, One Health PACT (OH-PACT). This research project focusses on prevention and prediction of mosquito-borne viruses in the Netherlands and Spain. As a result of this finding, a message was sent to Dutch specialists and laboratories to pay attention to suspected infections with West Nile virus. Circulation of the virus in the Utrecht area was confirmed by OH-PACT research in mosquitoes and two additional positive tested birds.
Vector season
As the weather conditions change, the mosquito season will come to an end in the coming weeks. Therefore, the risk of infection is expected to be low. Prior to next year’s vector season, advice and possible additional measures will be proposed.
