Introducing new One Health PACT / Avans – Lab-students 2025!

Three Biology and Laboratorial Research students from Avans are working for the next six months on OHPACT-related projects under the supervision of teachers with OHPACT. Within this part of the curriculum of the bachelor education, project based learning is essential.

Who am I?
My name is Roy van Engelen. I am 25 years old bachelor student at the university of applied sciences Avans hogeschool, I am currently doing the minor bioinformatics.
What subject will I be focussing on this semester? What will I be researching?
The subject that I will be focusing on this semester is to evaluate the current virus annotation technique to other virus annotation techniques by comparing them with the use of bioinformatic tools.
What do I want to do with this in the future?
Bioinformatics is a big part of biology and especially microbiology where I am most interested in. So any additional knowledge I can use in microbiology helps with find a job and with a master’s study.
What would I like to learn?
What I like to learn is the basics and maybe little bit more about bioinformatics and the use of it is science. And to learn if this area of expertise is something I am interested in for the future of my career.

Who am I?
I am Mila Willemsen, a 3rd year bachelor student majoring in Biology and Medical Laboratory Research at Avans, and I am currently starting out as an intern at the Centre of Expertise Perspectief in Gezondheid under One Health PACT.
What subject will I be focussing on this semester? What will I be researching?
I will be focussing on setting up quick, fieldable assays for detecting West Nile Virus and Usutu Virus, as well as identifying Culex pipiens and Aedes albopictus.
What do I want to do with this in the future?
In the future, I would like to make valuable contributions to global public health and well-being with knowledge of timely detection of virus outbreaks and limiting their spread.
What would I like to learn?
I would like deepen my understanding of fieldable virus detection methods and learn how to effectively set them up for diagnostic use.

Who am I?
I am Michael Palinckx, a 3rd year bachelor student majoring in Biology and Medical Laboratory Research at Avans in Breda. I am currently following the minor Bioinformatics.
What subject will I be focussing on this semester? What will I be researching?
I will focus on the annotation of virus genomes sequenced by Erasmus MC. Where old methods will be compared with new methods, to determine which method is the most accurate.
What do I want to do with this in the future?
I want to be able to use bioinformatic tools in the future so I am able to analyse data with bioinformatic tools. Also I want to have an impact on limiting virus outbreaks.
What would I like to learn?
I would like to learn to use bioinformatic tools and want to know if bioinformatics is something for me to go on in the future. I want to learn how to annotate a virus.
