One Health PACT / Avans – Lab-student: Sergio Dries
Three Biology and Laboratorial Research students from Avans are working for the next six months on OHPACT-related projects under the supervision of teachers with OHPACT as their client in the minor bio-informatics. Within this part of the curriculum of the bachelor education, project based learning is essential.
One of this students is Sergio Dries
Who am I?
I am Sergio Dries, 23 years old and live in a small town called Maassluis (just next to Rotterdam). I like to play and watch football, I can also often be found in the gym.
What subject will I be focussing on this semester? What will I be researching?
The subjects I am focused on the most are programming and computitional biology. This is mainly because I want to learn how I can combine these skills to biological and chemical related work. For the project I am mainly working on establishing a pipeline to detect the tick vector species after metagenomic ONT sequencing. This in addition to the virome present.
What do I want to do with this in the future?
I still don’t really know what I want to do after I am graduated. I am verry interested in al biological and chemical processes but I don’t see myself working 5 day’s a week in a lab. That is why I chose for a bioinformatics minor so I can develop skills for work that is done outside the lab.
What would I like to learn?
I would like to learn how to make a pipline with python and how to manage big data. This is mainly because I want to learn how to use python in a usefull way for biological data. I am looking forward too see what kind of results we are gonna get at the end of the project.
